Introduction

  • Calibration of the measuring cuvette is to determine its volume. This is important when you want to take an accurate sample of water for analysis.

  • Before the Smart Tester is put into operation for the first time, the measuring cuvette should be calibrated and each time the measuring cuvette is replaced with another one.

  • During calibration, the device should be placed in a horizontal position, and preferably when it is already mounted in the target location. Any change in the orientation of the device may affect the calibration result. When calibrating the cuvette, the magnetic stir bar, should be in the measuring cuvette.

  • If the calibration process of the measuring cuvette is not performed at all or correctly then:

    • an error "measurement couvete has not been calibrated" will be reported when trying to start the measurement,

    • or the measurement cuvette may overflow with water,

    • or the measurement results may be incorrect.

Preparation for the calibration process of the measuring cuvette

To follow through calibration of measurement couvette process, You will need:

  • Two pipes about 20cm long each.

  • A beaker of RO water or salt water. It is recommended to prepare at least 20ml volume of liquid so that the hoses silicon tubes will not be aerated when the Smart Tester takes a water sample.

  • Electronic scale.

Preparing the Smart Tester for the calibration process.

Install a washed and clean measuring cuvette into the Smart Tester according to the instructions. Don't forget to place the magnetic stir bar in the measuring cuvette. Connect the prepared 20cm hoses silicon tubes to the aquarium water connection - IN and the used water connection - OUT on the Smart Tester. Select the type of water to be used in the calibration process (RO water or salt water). Place the prepared hoses silicon tubes in the prepared beaker of water.

Then press the "Start" button. Note, liquid may flow out of the hosessilicon tubes.

Draining the hosessilicon tubes.

Emptying the system of the remaining liquid is in progress. The emptying and filling pump are now running. The step will take 5 minutes, and liquid can flow out of the OUT and IN connections. The indication on the housing will turn blue and then yellow if the step is completed successfully, or red if an error occurs.

Measuring the weight of a beaker of water.

Prepare the beaker of water and measure its weight. It is recommended to prepare at least 20ml volume of liquid so that the hoses silicon tubes do not become aerated when the Smart Tester takes a water sample. Enter the measured weight in the "weight" field with an accuracy of at least two decimal places. In this and the next steps, you can enter the net water weight or the combined weight of the water and beaker, but always use the same type of measurement.

Make a note of the measured weight in this step on a piece of paper. This data can be helpful in contacting Technical Support in case of problems.

Next, dip both hoses silicon tubes into the beaker of water so that the Smart Tester can freely draw water and press the "Next" button.

Measuring the volume of the measuring cuvette and taking a water sample.

Measuring the volume of the measuring cuvette. The step will take up to 10 minutes and during this time the Smart Tester will perform the following actions:

  • the measuring system will be thermally stabilized (up to 1.5minutes),

  • the filling pump will draw a water sample into the measuring cuvette (up to 5 minutes),

  • the measuring pump will empty the hose silicon tube of water (up to 5 minutes).

Make sure that the hoses silicon tubes are placed in water and there is no airing of the hosessilicon tubes. The indication on the housing will turn blue and then yellow when the step is completed successfully, or red if an error occurs.

Measuring the weight of a beaker of water.

Carefully remove the hoses silicon tubes from the beaker of water and measure its weight. Enter the measured weight in the "weight" box to at least two decimal places.

Make a note of the measured weight in this step on a piece of paper. This data can be helpful in contacting Technical Support in case of problems.

Next, immerse both hoses silicon tubes in a beaker of water so that the Smart Tester can drain the water from the measuring cuvette into the beaker and press the "Next" button.

Measuring the volume of the measuring cuvette and emptying the measuring cuvette.

Removing the water sample from the measuring cuvette. The step will take 5 minutes and during this time the Smart Tester will perform the following actions:

  • The emptying pump will remove the collected water sample from the measuring cuvette (up to 5 minutes).

Make sure the hoses silicon tubes are placed in the beaker of water. The indication on the housing will turn blue and then yellow when the step is completed successfully or red when an error occurs.

Remove the hoses silicon tubes from the beaker of water and measure its weight. Enter the measured weight in the "weight" box to at least two decimal places.

Make a note of the measured weight in this step on a piece of paper. This data can help you contact Technical Support in case of problems.

Press the "finish" button. If the given measured weights are correct then the indication on the device housing will turn yellow. The Smart Tester is ready for operation. Connect the hoses silicon tubes to the aquarium water connection - IN and the used water connection - OUT on the Smart Tester as for normal use. In case of an error, the indication on the Smart Tester housing will turn red.

Errors during the calibration process of the measuring cuvette

If an error occurs during the calibration process, the entire process must be carried out again.

Error in step 4/7

Failed to take a water sample. The entire calibration process must be stopped and started again. Before repeating the calibration process, check:

  • whether if the hoses silicon tubes have been connected to the Smart Tester and placed in a beaker of water,

  • whether if the tubing silicon tubes is of the required length,

  • whether if the measuring cuvette is clean.

If the problem occurs, contact Technical Support.

The error occurs when:

  • the photometric circuit is defective,

  • the measuring cuvette is dirty,

  • the filling tube is not placed in the aquarium water,

  • the filling tube is too long (longer than 2 m),

  • Smart Tester is placed too high in relation to the beaker from which the water sample is taken,

  • the filling tube is clogged or damaged,

  • the filling pump is defective.

Error in step 7/7

The specified weights in step 3/7 ,5/7 or 7/7 are not correct. The entire calibration process must be stopped and started again. Before restarting the calibration process, check:

  • whether if you have a balance with a resolution of at least 0.01g,

  • whether if the balance has an accuracy class of at least +-0.05g,

  • that the hoses silicon tubes have the required length and are unobstructed.

If the problem occurs, contact Technical Support.

The error occurs when:

  • the measured volume of the measuring cuvette is outside the range <1ml - 10ml> i.e. the weight in step 3/7 minus the weight in step 5/7 is not within the range 1g-10g

  • the volume of water that remains in the measuring cuvette is greater than 1ml. i.e. the weight in step 3/7 minus the weight in step 7/7 is greater than 1g

Calibration coefficients

In the Statistics tab, under the items Volume A and Volume B, the calibration coefficients that define the measuring cuvette are defined. They are not relevant to the use of the device, but may be helpful when contacting Technical Support.
